Four generations of Boxley women who called the Boxley Place home have been visionaries and leaders in the town and county of Louisa. First in the story is Ethel Glascow Whyte Boxley who understood the need to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of her home community. Ethel resided in the house from 1913 until her death in December 1951. In 1935 she organized the Louisa Courthouse Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Regent until 1941. The Boxley Place was the site of many of the Chapter’s first meetings. In 2010 the 75th anniversary of the Chapter was celebrated in the same large dining room where the original formation of the chapter began.
Ethel and her husband Bruce Vaughn Boxley Sr. were responsible for the 1918 renovations of the Boxley Place and Cabin recognized by The National and State Historic Registers as “worthy of preservation†and important landmarks in the county.
Ethel’s son Bruce Vaughn Boxley Jr. published The Central Virginian newspaper from 1940 until his death in 1955. Following his death his wife Annie Gris McIntosh Boxley became the publisher along with her partner Lewise Cosby. The women left an important chronical of events in Louisa County during the nationally tumultuous years of the 1950s and 60s. The paper was issued each week on Thursday and it was a standing practice for the two of them to take off together for a shopping adventure on Fridays. Annie Gris’s only daughter, Griswold Boxley Cousins joined them in the operation of the tri county publication. Griswold was one of the first women to serve on the Louisa Town Council and the third generation to live at Boxley Place.
Today Breese Cousins Brockman is the fourth generation of Boxley women to own the historic property which is now The Boxley Place Inn Bed and Breakfast. Visitors and guests are welcomed to the same large dining room that was the site of the original organization of the local chapter of the DAR.
