Title
Wheat Barn at Ionia, Green Springs
Subject
18th C. Architecture
Description
One of the oldest timber frame barns in Virginia. Built by James "Wheatstacks" Watson soon after he purchased this farm in 1773. The Library of Congress HABS collection states that at least two family documents refer to a mill on James Watson's farm and it is very likely it was located in this barn.
There is a a large opening in the floor to the lower level. Some of the wainscoting on the walls to keep grain from falling to the lower levels is still in place and grooves can easily be seen where more existed in the past.
The barn is currently unused.
