Stay at the Louisa Hotel
Subject
Transportation
Description
This metal sign, posted just a few miles outside of Louisa, was intended to lure tired travelers with the promise of meals and a night's lodging for $2.00 (plus the added attraction of a garage for those who arrived by automobile).
The Louisa Hotel was built in 1887 and narrowly escaped the fire which ravaged most of downtown Louisa in 1888. Over the next three decades, travelers came from Richmond and the Tidewater region to escape the summer heat at this resort hotel. Patrons also arrived by train and, since the tracks ran very near the rear of the hotel, all were certainly aware of each train's arrival and departure.
