Tool making is a societal art that is directly related to human survival. Tools allowed humans to dominate their environment and later to enable artistic expression. 

More than 130 different types of tools have been found in Virginia. The range of uses is extraordinary. Stone tools are extremely abundant in our area and have been found by the millions throughout Virginia. Wood tools simply do not survive archaeologically and bone is rare.
