Description

This is the home of Patrick Henry. He began his political career by representing Louisa County in the House of Burgesses. He earned this position after defending the vestry of Louisa County against Reverend James Maury, who taught Thomas Jefferson and Dabney Carr. In this case, known as "The Parson's Cause," Reverend Maury and other local planters were seeking a second trial to acquire more money to compensate for tobacco that had been lost in the 1758 drought. Thomas Johnson, the warden of the vestry and a member of the House of Burgesses, was so impressed by Patrick Henry's defense that he resigned his seat and make arrangements for Patrick Henry to hold the position and move into Roundabout.
