Description

These documents are copies from the Freedmen's Bureau Field Office at Louisa Court House of the contract between John Cammack and the trustees of the First Baptist Church (including Fountain Perkins) for the purchase of the building that would become the African American church. The contract is dated for March 19, 1866, and it expires April 1, 1876 (the day that the trustees must be finished making their payments to Cammack).

A school was started for freedmen and their children in the church and is the only school found in the Freedmen's Bureau recordds that actually operated between 1865-1868. When the public school system started in 1871, the school for African-American children continued to operate at the First Baptist Church until the Louisa Training School was completed in 1927.
