Description
Easter Cluff was an enslaved woman sold by Samuel Clough in the mid-1850s. This letter, written in 1866 by her last owner before emancipation is addressed from Macon, Georgia, in the hopes of learning from anyone in Louisa County about Easter's family. The letter is addressed to the Clerk of Court of Louisa County and was passed on to the Freedmen's Bureau office. There is no follow up to this letter to let us know if anyone ventured the twenty miles from the courthouse to the Clough residence in Orchid to find out the news she was anxious to have about her children's wellbeing.

This letter is written on behalf of a negro woman by the name of Easter who use to belong to Sam C. Cluff Sr + was brought from Va to Charleston SC about fifteen years ago by a man named Thomas Armstrong. Easter is very anxious to hear from her children who also belonged to Mr Cluff. Their names are Geo Washington, John Price, Thomas Jefferson, Jordan Austin + Charlotte Ellis. I bought Easter about ten or twelves years ago + she is with me still. She is very anxious to hear from her children + any information will be thankfully recd by me. I direct this to the clerk of the court and ask him as a special favour to hand it to Samuel of the Cluff family. an early reply is requested. Easter is old + feeble and I feel anxious she should get this information without delay
